Teaching Module

The following is an introductory module, meant to guide the educator; it is offered as one way of educating busy but dedicated practitioners. It is by no means all inclusive or fixed. Education facilitators should feel free to adapt this guide in an effort to best train ED practitioners. Human trafficking is a complex topic, and it may be more appropriate to invite an expert speaker or use an official training resource.

1. Introduction & Salutation:

  • Name and position

  • Clearly state the learning objectives for the session (e.g., define human trafficking, name 5 red flags of labor/sex trafficking)

2. Administer Pre-Training Survey

3. Present Case Study (this portion should take no more than 5 minutes):

  • Summarize the initial clinical presentation of any of the three cases shared in “Teaching Cases” (see the Teaching Cases tab).

  • Ask the learner group what their next steps would be (what tests do they want, what more information do they need?) (~2 min, depending on group size; do not get involved in helping the group determine what they want to do; answer questions you can based on the story content)

  • Do not resolve the case for the learners

4. PowerPoint Presentation (or some other slide format)
You should develop your own; avoid sensational and stereotypical images.

5. Administer Training Evaluation

Before you give this presentation you should be familiar with the following resources:

  1. The content of the “Information” and the “In the ED” pages

  2. The three Teaching Cases

  3. Read U.S. testimonies at www.polaris.org

  4. Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2005

  5. Jill Leighton, Ricardo Veisaga, and Ashek Hamid's stories (below)
